Three years ago, NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, introduced satellite photos of Wando's seaweed farm, the largest in Korea, which became a hot topic.

This time, NASA invited Wando County to discuss certification of carbon absorbed by seaweed, also known as 'blue carbon'.

A seaweed farm spread out like a semiconductor on the blue sea.

This is a satellite photo released by NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, in April 2021, of the waters off Wando, South Jeolla Province.

At the time, NASA introduced Wando as the optimal location for seaweed farming and emphasized the excellence of eco-friendly farming.

Last January, an agency under the U.S. Department of Energy also visited Wando.

Thanks to satellite photography, this time Wando County was invited to visit NASA in the United States.

To publicize the excellence and technology of cultivating Wando seaweed, which is of interest to NASA.

<Laura Lorenzoni / NASA Marine Biology and Biogeochemistry Director> “Seaweeds are one of the most important blue carbon ecosystems, along with mangroves and wetlands. We will continue to explore all that is fascinating about seaweeds…”

Wando County also discussed certification and research on seaweed ‘blue carbon’.

Blue carbon refers to carbon absorbed by marine ecosystems.

<Shin Woo-cheol / Wando County Governor> “NASA is interested in getting seaweed recognized as blue carbon, and there is also a lot of interest in offshore farming, so we are making joint efforts to get it recognized as blue carbon…”

Wando County also visited the Energy Advanced Planning Institute, an agency of the U.S. Department of Energy.

The two organizations will establish an ‘offshore seaweed cultivation technology system’ in the open sea of Wando starting next year.

The plan is to conduct research on cultivating large brown algae using cutting-edge technologies to absorb carbon.

Wando County plans to utilize the research results as marine bio-industry materials and future energy sources.

“I found this blog post absolutely fascinating! It’s incredible to see how a small coastal town like Wando is driving a global green revolution. The connection between seaweed farming and blue carbon is something I had never considered before. The fact that NASA is also involved in monitoring these efforts makes it feel like we’re witnessing the future of sustainable solutions. This article does a great job of explaining complex concepts in a way that’s engaging and easy to understand. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Wando’s progress!”
